Mindset challenged*

I’ve been in the building business for over 25 years crafting designer homes at the top end of the market. I’ve been very successful, but the changes in the economic environment over the last few years have caused me to question my acumen. I know I build superior homes and deliver a superb product, but I’ve found myself doubting my business ability. I needed some external perspective, so sought to engage a business coach – who could handle “rigorous” discussion. It’s been demanding and my mindset has been challenged but I’ve been able to bat ideas around and get a fresh approach to some areas of business. Also – it’s nice to have someone to sound of at – rather than just the computer screen!

If you do the same thing today as you did yesterday tomorrow will be predictably similar – so the story goes. Trouble is if what you did yesterday worked, and today it doesn’t, it gets a bit confusing – because it should! It would appear that nothing stays the same but everyone does – or do they?

Fresh approach to sales*

Recently we were preparing and presenting many bids, but not converting many of these into sales. The Successful Builder helped us learn a fresh approach to our sales process and we are now placing greater emphasis on identifying more clearly the needs of our clients and being with them when they make their final buying decision. Our conversion rate was 1 in 8, but I expect it to rise to 1 in 4…doubling my income*.

From $350k to $1.5m in just over one year*

When I started my own building business I was working on the tools. I wanted to build a large business but knew I couldn’t do so without employing people. I needed to learn how to recruit staff, how to market to great customers and how to price and sell effectively, I really needed to master the basics of business.

Now just 13 months later the business has grown to one and a half million and I am off the tools (well – most of the time). My team has grown to 9 and includes a project manager an office manager and a contract QS. I am focused on selling and growing the business to the next level.

Recently I took my family on holiday for 10 days – and the business continued to run without me – smoothly!*

Starting to understand what it’s like to have a business working for me*

I had a good business running a team of four and working part-time on the tools myself. Although I was busy I knew that I was not at my full potential and that to reach it I needed to invest in learning more about working with staff and leading teams. I also wanted to improve the business systems. So I started working with the Successful Builder Coaching program.

It’s taken time and effort but in 9 months I have grown in my understanding and built the team up to 8 builders (and growing) and a part-time administrator. Also I am about to install a project manager*.

As a result I am now starting to understand what it feels like to have a business that will work for me while I take time away to spend with the family.

Revenue has increased 1197%*

When we first started with The Builder Business Coach we had a team of 3. I was only 22yrs young and knew little about business. Graeme has taught me in-depth knowledge of sales, marketing, recruitment, finances, and operational systems. In 2009 our annual revenue was $167k. Three years later our revenue has increased 1197%, to over $2m*. We now have a team of 15 and are still growing. All this during the recession where many builders are sitting around at home waiting for the phone to ring. No time for family and friends *

Initially we were going nowhere with our business. We had no time for family and friends and decided that we needed to make a change. We first calculated our break even point so we knew what it was going to cost us to achieve our goals. This allowed us to move into marketing and determine what sort of sales and revenues we needed to achieve those goals. The marketing plan has been put in place giving us more control of our advertising budget and we are discovering more effective ways of marketing. It hasn’t been plain sailing by any means. We have done a lot of hard work and we still have a lot of hard work in front of us, But I believe that we will achieve our goals*.

Personal goals becoming a reality*

I have been working in the building industry since I was a teenager. I have always worked hard and had specific long term goals for myself and my family. The work kept trickling in but my business was not growing, despite working long hours, and success in achieving my personal goals seemed further and further away.

Enlisting Graeme Owen as my business coach really turned things around. I have learnt about sales processes, marketing, how to organise and monitor my finances to name a few. My business has grown and I am now off the tools. We are a team of 7 and I now focus on working with clients, running team leaders and growing the business*. We are finally making a steady income and our personal goals are starting to become a reality.

Average Sale increased 44% in 3 months*

When we first started with The Builders Business Coach our major threat was lack of work. We had never experienced such a down-turn in the market. Within three months our average sale had increased by 44%, productivity by 6% and profits by 19%*.

Less than 6 months to Revenue of $1.5m*

When I started out with The Successful Builder I was in debt, working long hours and spending very little time together with my wife. I was being run around by everyone, suffering stress and earning very little. The Build your Building Business program helped me focus on important tasks and ensured I stayed on track to building my business. The going was tough and I was tempted to give up many times, but the coaching helped me stick with it. Now less than six months into the program revenue has increased to almost $1.5m (annualised), I have enough work to employ four builders, and I am almost fully off the tools*. But best of all I am now paying myself a decent salary. I am well on the way to reaching my first business milestone.

Revenue from $900k to $3m*

The Builders Business Coach helped us with business planning, systems and strategies, identifying key actions, organising and reporting. Our renovations and maintenance divisions are run almost entirely by capable managers and we are now focused on building a serious construction business*. Our original dream was to grow a business large enough to get us off the tools. This happened long ago.

Learned to sell professionally and confidently*

I was at a stage where I was ready to throw the business in and go back to working for someone else. I was tired of trying to control workers and being expected to please everyone. Also I was under way too much stress and weary from not making any money. 

But when I watched one of thesuccessfulbuilder.com webinars I realized that others had benefited from business coaching. So maybe I could too.  

It’s made a huge difference. I now understand my finances and I know how to price for profit. I have created business systems that enable me to be off the tools and focus on growing the business. I have grown the team from two to seven (including myself), and I am paying myself a decent salary. 

But probably the biggest difference has been in me. I have learned how to sell professionally and confidently with integrity. The sales process, scripts and collateral that we developed work, and I go into sales meetings with a clear plan and purpose, feeling totally confident in the outcome. 

I am really looking forward to taking the business to the next level.
