Five Ways To Save Time While Growing Your Building Business

“Is it possible to grow my business and still have free time?”

I’m often asked this from new coaching clients. My answer is always “Yes!” But, you must overcome ‘the time trap’ – thinking that time is its own master and can’t be managed.

Time is like a bank that credits your account daily with $86,400! The condition? Each night, every dollar not spent is cancelled. Would you spend it? Of course!

Time’s like that bank. Each morning 86,000 seconds are deposited into your day and every night the time takes out whatever you failed to spend that day. Time is a resource that can be spent but not saved.

In this article I'll show you five simple yet practical steps to help you save time while growing your building business.

  1. State your monthly priorityAt the beginning of each month set the top activity that’ll bring you closer to your long-term goals. Usually this will focus on improving or growing your business. For example:

  2. Run a weekly default calendarCreate a “Typical Week” diary and aim to keep to it. Select the regular activates that are important for your business and set aside blocks of time for these. During these blocks of time focus solely on these activities.

  1. Plan tomorrow tonightDecide on tomorrow’s main tasks before you finish today and list them in your diary. Save your self the worry at night and time in the morning by planning tomorrow while it’s fresh in your mind. Schedule your most difficult tasks for your most productive time of day.

  1. Set achievable targetsThe best way to ensure success is to practice being successful. So set achievable targets. Stretch goals are good too but make sure they can be accomplished. Tick off your tasks as you complete them and reschedule those you can’t.

  1. Collate similar tasksThere’s a widespread myth that successful people multitask. I’ve got good news for all you blocks out there… it’s not true! Our brain has been designed to naturally focus on one thing at a time. When we multitask our brain has to disengage from one activity in order to engage in another. So…nothing gets done well. Collate your tasks together. If you’re working on pricing and quoting, shut the door, turn off the phone and mail notifications and focus on pricing that job.

Summary

So, state your monthly priority, run a weekly default calendar, plan tomorrow tonight, set achievable targets and collate similar tasks.  When you take decisive actions to plan and control the way you spend your time you will find that you’re able to grow and develop your business and have time for the more important things in your life.
