How to Become a Successful Builder #3 – Welcome Pressure
Renovation not going to plan? Got that “under pressure” feeling again? Thought you should’ve grown past that by now?If only you had the composure of Sonny (in the movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) when he says,“Everything will be all right in the end... if it's not all right then it's not yet the end.”But being under pressure is not that painless. In this article I outline the three things that highly successful builders have mastered that motivates them to welcome pressure.
1 Growth is Never Lineal
Seen the nice smooth line graph? Drawn one yourself…to chart your business over the next year? Happy days! But, no small construction business ever grows like that. All it takes is the completion of a large job to skew your growth or mess up your profit line. It’s a nice idea but it never happens in reality.Growth usually happens in fast spurts followed by periods of “mopping up.”
2 Growth Follows a Break-Through
Periods of growth in a small building business follow often follow disruption of normal activity.Several things come together to push you to a new level. But you have to break-through some existing structures, break-free from some inadequate ways of doing business, or even break-away from some (nice) people who are just holding you back.
3 Break-Through Takes Pressure
Just as you can’t get steam without boiling water or diamonds without tons of force, so you can’t have a break-through without pressure. There’s no short cut.So you make the choice:
Turn back Or Welcome the struggle.
Turn back and you have defined your upper limit. Welcome the pressure and break-through. It won’t be easy…but it will do you and your business good.
Two Examples of Break Through
Winning a huge job breaks up your existing team by the addition of new people and the new working relationships that need to be formed. It puts pressure on your recruiting, training and managing resources.
A successful marketing event that nets you as many leads as you had in the whole of last year, requires a re-shaping of your design and quoting processes and the addition of a sales manager. This puts pressure on the balance of your forward planning as you don’t yet know the nature, value or timing of the jobs that will come from these new clients.
Question
So what pressures are you facing? What’s your next break-through? What would you advise a fellow builder under pressure?I’d love to hear your experiences.Post you comments below
