How many owners of successful building companies do you know?

When did you last have lunch with a builder who didn't have to be on the job for his business to be functioning well?

Not for a long time? Hmmm.

You see if you are hoping to grow your building business and become a successful business owner, but you don't spend any time with already successful building contractors, then you have a real problem.

While there are some exceptions that "prove the rule," the greatest influence on most of us are the people we regularly keep company with.

People who associate with criminals and much more likely to get into trouble with the law. Similarly if you associate only with unsuccessful renovators, you are likely to imitate their habits. But, when you associate with successful builders you are much more likely to imitate their habits.

So how do you go about associating with owners of successful builders?

In this post I suggest three ways you can build your networking skills with owners of successful trade businesses.

1. Join the local chapter of your builder's association

If you have a builders' association your area then join in their activities. Get involved in any service programs they are engaged in and put yourself forward as a candidate for leadership. It is the successful builders who have the time to give to working with their local organisation.

2. Build great connections with suppliers

Your local building supplier is likely to know many successful builders in your area. Not only does he supply them, but is is highly likely that he views his success as linked to theirs. So he is on the lookout for successful building contractors - not failing ones - who are likely to cost him money.

3. Act like one

Successful builders are successful people. They treat others with respect, pay their bills and tend to employ better team members. So copy these habits immediately. Choose to do similarly and you will be surprised at who will show up around you. A builder I was talking with recently commented on how easy it was to get great team members once he began to focus on being a successful person.

Building a successful business is not just about getting the right systems. It is also about being and about beingwith.
