So the building and construction landscape has changed in the last few years.   1. Do you want different results in your building business? yes/no

  2. Have you spent a long time trying to get different results? yes/no

  3. Are you still doing the same thing? Ah… yes/no

If you answered yes to the above, then YOU (rather than the industry) are insane! “What!” I hear you say. “You’re not  a shrink? You can't say that!.” You're right, I can't.But Albert Einstein can. He said

Insanity = doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Below I outline three steps to getting different result.

1. Identify the Actions that Produced the Results

Results in building businesses (good or bad) come from actions.  Good results from good actions: bad results from bad actions. There is always an action(s) behind a result. So, find the action that led to the result.

2. Expose the Choices You Made

However, actions arise from choices. So go a little deeper.  Often it’s automatic or subconscious, but there is always a choice. Exposing the choices gives you better self-awareness.

3. Think of New Choices You Can Make

Actions may be hard to change. But choices are easy. Thinking about choices gives you options for actions. It stops you simply repeating the same old stuff. So, if you really want to improve the results you have been getting re-think some of the choices you are making. Then when a similar situation arises you can make a better choice.

For Example

Bad Result: Jimmy, my new builder didn't turn up on time to several jobs. This caused customer frustration and cost me time and money. When I hired him I didn’t have time to check references, because I was desperate, so I took his word.Reflection: Not checking reference costs money.New Choices: I will add referencing checking to the hiring procedure.New Actions: The hiring procedures will be followed each and every time.New Results: Improved customer satisfaction and money savings.

Summary

Decide to put an end to insanity by saying no to the same old results and yes to thinking that changes your choices so that you take new actions that lead to better (successful) results!
