You Can’t Grow Your Building Business!! Then Check This Out
“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”NOT true for successful builders. Builders are always learning… even the old ones! It’s part of their psyche. You learned as an apprentice. Then the rules changed and you had to adapt …then new materials… new fixings… new products. Constant change and constant learningThen the economy changed… and many building companies failed. You probably survived, but not without learning some new painful realities. Now the environment is changing again. Will you adapt again? Yes you can if you will understand how learning progresses. In this post I outline the four steps you traverse in mastering new skills.
1 Unconscious Incompetence.
Not knowing is blissful ignorance. E.g. before smart phones existed, you didn't know you couldn't operate one! But when you saw it, and what it could do, even though you couldn't operate it, you wanted to drive one. At that point you got off the first step in learning. You became conscious of what you couldn't do… and you wanted to learn how to “do it.”Exactly the same in business. Until you know what you’re missing, you live in ignorance. But once you realize it and want it, you’re away.
IGNITION!
2 Conscious Incompetence
Step two is uncomfortable. Suddenly you’re aware of what you haven’t seen before. You know you need to learn some new stuff and master some new skills, but you don’t know where to start… or in what order. You can go about your learning the slow way, by trial and error, or you can ask someone who has been there before and short circuit the route by getting hold of their knowledge and skills. But do it quickly. Once you have that new stuff, the fun really begins.
3 Conscious Competence
Because this is when you get to try out the new things. FUN. Even though you don’t know if they will work! You've only got the word of others.Like when you were learning to ride a bike, or a horse. They told you, “You can do it!” But you fell off! And it hurt! Remember? But you persevered. And now it’s easy.Same in growing your building business. Learning and applying new skills can be hard. But once you master them it’s sweet. You enter the next stage where it all seems so easy.
4 Unconscious Competence
Like this …you can fix a sheet of wall board without even thinking about it. You’ve done it many times. Fact is, you can hold an intelligent conversation at the same time! Because once you really master a skill you do it without even thinking. It’s second nature. The same is true in growing a building business. It’s frightful getting started and scary when you are not sure if “it’ll work.” But once you’ve grown through several stages, you do it without even thinking. That’s a fun place to be.
